Communities Awards 2009 - The Winners
Dot Curtis The Community Award, which acknowledes the voluntary work and commitment of an unsung community hero, went to Dot Curtis.
She is a member of Thornbury and District Old Peoples Welfare committee, chairman of Thornbury Diabetics Support Group and is on the Town Trust
In presenting the award to Juliet Olson, who nominated Dot and received the award on her behalf, Rotary President Ray Carney said “Dot has the ability to involve elderly people who can become marginalized. She makes people feel wanted and involved within the community”.
The Charity Award, which is for an individual who each year undertakes tireless work and fundraising for charities was presented to Paul Emsley in recognition of his commitment to helping disabled people in recent years. Dot Curtis
He is a trustee of the Blind Charity “Have stick will travel”, and spends many hours helping disabled people regain fitness through swimming and walking.
He has also run several marathons to raise money for cancer charities. He was nominated by Sylvia Gallimore.
Dot Curtis The Young Community Award, which honours achievements of people under the age of 18 years who make a positive commitment to local community life, went jointly to Zoe Wide and Liam Scott for their contribution to Thornbury Community Broadcasting.
They were proposed by Helen Harrison who commended them for the huge amount of voluntary service to Thornbury FM, both in presenting shows and working as receptionists.
President Ray stated “They have made a major contribution in helping the station consider permanent broadcasting. Their capacity to work under tight deadlines has resulted in uninterrupted broadcasting schedules”.
Thornbury Rotary's Community Awards Scheme publicly recognises the diverse way in which people enhance our community and the lives of those within it. Four awards categories have been established: Community, Young Community, Charity and Courage.
